Jort Merken, born in Bilzen (Belgium) in 1988, completed his bachelor in medicine in 2010 at the University of Maastricht. Hereafter, he combined his master in medicine with scientific research at the Biomedical engineering department of the University of Maastricht. The latter resulted, with the help of Bart Spronck, in a method to determine the individual orientation of smooth muscle cells in intact tissue. He obtained his master in medicine degree in 2014. After doing multiple internships for his master in medicine at the cardiology department at the academic hospital of Maastricht, he started as a PhD at the research group of Prof. Dr. S. Heymans at the University of Maastricht. He is or will be enrolled in European projects, i.e. Hecatos and Homage, to investigate novel and known biomarkers and other predictors for the early detection and therapy in patients with heart failure and dilated cardiomyopathies.
Jort’s hobbies are photography, fitness, and he likes to go to the movies.
