Ward Heggermont (born on the 1st of July 1984) obtained his Medical Degree in 2009 at the Catholic University of Leuven (Belgium). After one year of clinical internship in Cardiology, he started his PhD thesis, sponsored by an FWO grant (Fonds Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek Vlaanderen (Belgium)), in October 2010, and succesfully ended in 2014. He worked as a student-researcher in the Rega Institute (Leuven, Belgium), between 2004 and 2007, under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Erik De Clercq and Prof. Dr. Johan Neyts. He has a particular interest in the overlapping scientific fields of Virology and Cardiology, and Metabolism. Currently, he is working on micro-RNAs involved in viral myocarditis (miR-221/-222), and cardiac hypertrophy and heart failure (miR-146a).
He will finish his training as Cardiologist by the end of 2017, and will work at the Academic Hospital of Aalst. From 2018 on, he will continu his research at our centre in Maastricht, and at the Hospital of Aalst.
